3 Steps To Rejuvenate Summer Skin

It’s hard to believe that Summer is coming to an end!  It’s still warm and still daylight after 6PM, but we know this is all starting to wind down, and Fall/ Winter will be here before we know it. ☹

There is no time like now to recovery your skin from the heat, and Sun.  I know it’s been so HOT that you may have skipped your moisturizers, and the much needed sunscreen, but that’s exactly why you have to implement the recovery steps TODAY!!

Here are 3 steps to add to YOUR skincare routine… (if you aren’t already doing them)😊

  1. EXFOLIATION– This process can be  physical, granular, or acid base.  Depending on your skin type I would recommend the following for the different skin types:

Physical exfoliation is the use of a machine to remove the dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin.  Great for Dry Skin, Combination,  Normal, and some oily skin. (not oily acne)

Granular exfoliation is the use of a water-soluble product that is grainy in texture that when wet will remove the dead skin from the surface of the skin. Great for Dry, Combo, and Normal skin.

Acid Base exfoliation is the use of a natural acid that can be derived from fruits, and plants.  There are some that are chemical grade as well.  This process penetrates a little deeper than the other 2.  Dead skin is more dissolved than removed, which gives a longer smoothing affect.  Great for ALL skin types, Dry, Oily, Combination, and Normal. Also, can be used on Sensitive skin, and Acne prone if the legions are healed.

2. TREATMENT– Treatments are what I like to call; some kind of repairing agent, like a Serum or Acne treatments.  SERUMs are my favorite!!!  They come in different forms and can do multiple things when applied correctly.  I am using a SERUM to repair my dehydrated, and discolored complexion.  I want to even out and get my glow back! 😊  Acne and blotchiness can be an issue as well.  You may want to look for a treatment that will dry up your breakouts, and soothe the skin.  Treatments are usually applied to the skin right after the exfoliation process, to help your skin soothe and refresh so that your moisturizer can do its thing…

3. MOISTURIZE!!!!!!   This step is SOOOOOOO important!   No matter what your skin type is, you should be using a moisturizer that is designed for YOUR skin type.  If you are DRY-use a moisturizer that will put moisture back into your skin or retain the moisture you have.  Oily-use a moisturizer that will give you just enough moisture and minimize oil, so you are hydrated but NOT overly oily.  Combination- use a moisturizer that is designed for combo skin, moisturizing the dry areas, and minimizing oil in oily areas.  Normal- can use moisturizers designed for a balance moisture.  I like creams at night, they are a bit more emollient and a pump moisturizer in the day.  I usually add an SPF separately in the mornings.

A great skincare routine is key! On a daily basis you should be using a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. With the added Exfoliation, and Treatments, your skin will feel and look brighter, younger, healthier and more restored.

3 reasons your Teen could be Breaking Out

 Acne can become a huge issue for your Teen or Preteen, (the puberty stage).  When there’s acne involved self-image and self confidence can be a huge challenge.  There are solutions to some of these issues, but first know that it will take some time depending on the skin condition.    

Here are 3 reasons your Teen could be Breaking Out:

  1. When there is a breakout, do they occur when its that time of the month? (you have your period) for girls, or when your voice changes and you start to get facial hair, for boys?  If so…. Chances are they could be hormonal. 
  2. Are you OILY, or look shiny, All the time even when you have just washed your face? I mean have a constant shine ALL DAY and you notice quite a few break outs come soon after? Chances are you have an over production of oil, which can be your skin type.
  3. Your break outs are very sensitive and red in a lot of clusters, usually on your forehead, cheeks or chin?  You could be suffering from a higher grade of ACNE and may need to see a dermatologist if your face doesn’t get better with store bought products.

Acne also can have different triggers, such as; Foods, your teen may be eating, Bacterial transfers from cell phones, hands on face, hats, and hair.  Stress can also be a cause!  We all stress about something or other, and Teens can have stress as well.

If you are breaking out constantly at any time, then you may have oily skin and may need to switch to a cleanser that contains at least one of these ingredients: Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, Latic Acid, Glycolic Acid, or Sulfur.   These ingredients help to clean out the pore, and help to kill the bacteria that causes the pimples.

A daily routine is key…. You can start by using a Cleanser, Toner, Treatment, and Moisturizer that has been created specifically for Oily and Acne skin.  Please keep in mind, just because you are Oily does not mean you will have acne, you can have a blemish here or there. Acne is in a class all be itself!  (another Blog Post…)   You can however; follow a routine that will clean, balance, treat, and restore your skin, to prevent break outs or at least minimize them.

As always, I recommend getting a facial, by a professional, to know your skin type, because using the wrong products for your skin can be a culprit also. Yes, teens can have facials, too. 🙂

Let’s SPRING into Action..

It’s that time again, and the Spring season is upon us.  Now we can start to prepare our skin for this Spring time period. 

For some of us, like myself, will have to deal with seasonal allergies, making our eyes, and nose itchy and runny.  You know what comes with this… rubbing or blowing!   This can lead to unsightly redness, and in some cases, darkness, around the eyes, or nose.

So.  What I like to do is pretreat my allergies with drops, and an antihistamine (allergy medicine), and up my dosage of vit C. I start when I feel any itching and by the time the season is underway, I’m good to go.

But if you’re not taking anything or using preventive measures, or if this isn’t working, what to do about the raw skin?

What I do, and have done, is to change up my routine slightly.  I still cleanse, treat, and hydrate, but now I may add something extra:

  1. Refrigerate some brewed teabags.  If your eyes are puffy in the mornings like my eyes get, the cooled teabags with the caffeine will help calm them down and deflate the puffiness.
  2. If your eyes are still itchy, I have used eye wash to flush out any irritations.
  3. You can also get one of those handy roller balls, for puffy eyes, and pop that in the fridge for about 10min.  (some eye creams come with this already attached) Once you roll that under, and in some cases over the eye, you can start to get some nice relief.
  4. For the dark discoloration around the eyes, and nose, it’s best to use products like an eye cream that contains, vitamin C, Retinol (nighttime only), and soothing ingredients, like aloe, and cucumber.  Around the nose I start using my brightening face creams at night like Sunday Riley’s Good Genes all -in -one lactic acid treatment.  Again, I would use a product that contained Retinol, if there isn’t soreness, and redness.  Then you would need soothing products only.

Facial Serums… What are they? Which one do I get?

Lots of questions, right?  Do you find yourself shopping for skincare and come across the facial serums?  Well I’m here to let you know, if you aren’t using one, you’re missing out.

A serum… in a nut shell.. is a treatment product that is applied after cleansing and before moisturizing, that allows your moisturizer to work in unison to achieve optimal results.  Serums contain properties that will either, aid in Anti-Aging, Correct skin Discoloration, resurface the skin, or ALL of these, and more.  It’s important that you know, what the facial serum’s benefits are, so you can choose the most appropriate type for your skin concern.

I have tried a few facial serums before I found one of my favorites; Lancôme’s Advanced Genifique, Youth Serum.  This product is excellent for me!  I usually use it at nighttime, before bed.  Once I apply a drop, with the dropper, message it into my face, neck and décolleté, apply my nighttime moisturizer, my face instantly feels nourished.  I wake up, and have soft, glowing skin.

 I also like Sunday Riley’s LUNA Sleeping Night Oil….This product is AWESOME!  During the summer this was the only treatment I used at night. ( NO moisturizer)  Technically, this is an OIL, but I use it as a serum in the colder months.  My face has never had a more radiant appearance.  

Just to be clear.. I do not use both products at the same time.  But I do like to switch it up, so my skin doesn’t get too use to one product.

You may notice that your face is a little or very different, once the seasons change.  This may be the time you can do the same, and Switch it Up!

The Aging Skin Affect

Is your dry skin becoming drier as you get older?

For those of us whom have had dry skin forever, it’s becoming a big problem. I have noticed that as I get older and my hormones are changing, my face and skin have been getting excessively itchier and tight, especially in the winter months. I mean everything from my forehead to my toe nails!

I’m not going to stress about it.. stressing will only create a different problem, like breakouts.😜 No.. but what I’m going to do is change my skincare routine, and add a few more steps to my repertoire.

Here are few things I’m going  to change and add:

  • Use a cleanser that will not only clean but remove makeup and not strip my oils… Aka a cleanser for anti-aging! I like Mary Kay’s Timewise 3-n-1 cleanser, and Lancome’s Crème Mousse Confort. 
  • Use an age defying Serum… one that would hold in moisture build collagen and even skin appearance.  I love Lancome’s Advance Genifique Youth Activating Serum, and Caudalie’s Vinoperfect Radiance Serum.
  • Get a really good exfoliate… maybe even get a microdermabrasion, or a peel. To remove those dead skin cells and lack luster, dull top skin layer, and aid in skin rejuvenation.  I like Fresh Sugar Face Scrub, for my face and body! I also like my Clarisonic, and my Spa’s Cell Renewal enzyme exfoliant. I also like my microdermabrasion treatment at the Spa.
  • Use a moisture rich, firming nighttime moisturizer.. preferably one that is richly creamy… Or a really good facial Oil!  For me now it’s Lancome’s Renergie Lift Multi-Action Lifting and Firming Moisturizer..smells great and amazing richness!  I’m also now loving Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil.

These are a few of my new routine upgrades, to keep my skin at its peak and to stay healthy.  If your skin isn’t feeling the affects yet, you can start  to maintain some moisture levels, by trying a new routine as well.

The 10 Super Foods for Your Skin

10 Super foods for the skin:

I have always wondered about the foods we consume and how they effect the skin.  I have found these 10 to be true:

1-Blueberry-  Blueberries fall into the tightener/re-newer category when it comes to skincare. This healthy and delicious antioxidant-rich fruit is high in fiber, vitamin A and vitamin C and low in saturated fat, cholesterol and  sodium. In addition, these tasty berries will help clear acne and blotchy spots on your skin, leaving you with a healthier, happier glow.

2-Spinach–  Leafy green vegetables, particularly spinach, are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. This particular vegetable is packed with lutein which helps to keep your eyes sparkling white. This healthy vegetable is also a great source of vitamin B, C and E as well as potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids. Swapping your normal lettuce for spinach will work wonders for your skin.

3-Kiwi-  Kiwis fall into the category of firming when it comes to skincare. This sour fruit will help prevent wrinkles while keeping your bones and teeth healthy as well. The antioxidants found in this delicious fruit will also help protect you from cancer – a definite bonus when it comes to a healthy diet.

4-Dark Chocolate–   Indulge in a few pieces of chocolate from every now and again. It may come as a surprise but dark chocolate – specifically chocolate that has high flavonol content and is at least 60 percent cocoa – helps skin stay hydrated. In addition, it also protects your skin from sun damage – one of the biggest culprits of unhealthy looking skin.

5-Salmon–  Salmon has been proven to help moisturize skin and keep it looking healthy and radiant. This fish is so rich in omega-3 fatty acids that it nourishes the skin by reducing the body’s production of inflammatory substances. In short, it helps clear clogged pores and erase fine lines and wrinkles, leaving your skin looking clear and refreshed.

6-Watermelon–  Watermelon falls into the sun protector/cancer fighter categories when it comes to skincare. While protecting you from cancer doesn’t necessarily help with maintaining a healthy glow, it’s definitely something you should be looking for when choosing foods for your diet. This mouth-watering fruit will help clear your blemishes, smooth your skin and improve your skin’s elasticity – all important elements of a healthy, fresh looking face.

7-Oranges–  Oranges are considered very effective wrinkle defenders by nutritionists all over the world. This delicious fruit is known for its toning properties. It’s also a great source of vitamin C (as most of you already know) which helps improve the texture and color of your skin. To finish things off, this citrus fruit helps restore collagen, leaving your skin firm and equipped to fight the signs of early aging.  This is why Vitamin C is used as an ingredient in a lot of products today.

8-Berries–  We mentioned blueberries in earlier on in the list, but it’s worth noting that all berries (particularly raspberries, blackberries and strawberries) are great in achieving a healthy glow. Like oranges and grapefruits, these fruits are high in vitamin C – a strong antioxidant which keeps the collagen in your skin healthy. They’re also high in anthocyanin and quercetin, which will help reduce inflammation and keep your skin looking evenly toned and radiant.

9-Avocados–  Avocados are great for preventing blemishes and enhancing the quality of your skin. This popular fruit is high in vitamins A, D and E. These vitamins help prevent the signs of aging. Avocados are also high in minerals like copper and iron. These minerals help the skin fight the signs of aging by defending against free radicals. Furthermore, this delicious fruit will help promote skin elasticity and pigment – leaving your skin (and hair) looking healthy refreshed all day long.

10-Eggs–  Eggs help your skin with tissue repair. The compounds found in eggs also help keep your skin clear of infections and acne. These breakfast items (which are also used in countless recipes everyday) are high in selenium, vitamin A and copper. Selenium wards off skin infections, vitamin A prevents your skin from developing abnormal clumps (which can turn into moles and skin tags) and copper promotes skin elasticity. A triple threat, if you ask us.

These are my favorites and if you are eating your portions correctly, they may work for you as well.  I know some people may have allergies to some of these foods, however; you can substitute the items with other foods that contain similar properties.

Ready for The Bridal Season?

Are you part of a Bridal Party, or attending a Wedding this season?

I’ve been asked to be a part of this beautiful experience, and boy it isn’t easy!  A bridesmaid can get just as stressed about this occasion as the Bride.  With so much to do, you can tend to neglect yourself, and when the time comes, you feel like you look a mess!  Now what?

Even though you’re NOT the bride, there is no reason you couldn’t be photo ready.  Here are some ideas you may want to use to start your beauty prep.

  • Makeup Trials– When the Bride gets her makeup trial, you should get one too.  Especially, if a Makeup Artist is going to provide service to you on that day.  The investment will be worth it, for you to see how you will look on her Big day.  FYI- very helpful if YOU are getting hitched soon after.
  • Why not get a facial– That’s right, get a facial… recommend to the Bride as well, and maybe you can make it a Gurlz day. When your skin is healthy, your makeup will not only look flawless on the Big Day, but on the days after the nuptials.
  • Bring your own bridal day kit– If you are in the bridal party, sometimes things do not go according to plan. The Bride has a lot to think about, so why not bring somethings along that she may need, and you may need as well, like: Lotion, deodorant, moisturizer, eye-drops, tissues, bobby pins, safety pins, and a small sewing kit.  You may also want to bring some lip balm, blotting paper, and a lip gloss, for your photo touch ups. (the may already have her own) 😉

Just remember a wedding is a blessed occasion, so don’t beat yourself up, enjoy and be happy, this is what it’s ALL truly about.

What you should look for in choosing a facial Spa

I’m a professional Skin care specialist and I have facials often.  It’s important to maintain appointments to keep your skin looking and functioning at its absolute best.

In choosing my Spa, I look for these key elements:

  • Cleanliness– You would assume that a facial Spa would be CLEAN, but rest assure some may not be as clean as they appear. Make sure utensils are sterilized with the UV machines and hands are cleansed or gloves are worn during extractions.
  • Certifications– Also look around the Spa for the Certifications of the person performing your Facial. There should be a photo with the license of that individual.  No license.. No Facial!!  This is very important because a licensed Professional has to undertake, many hours mandated by the State, and pass a State regulated exam.
  • The ambiance– I like when the facial spa has an inviting and warm atmosphere. The room is at a comfortable temp and a sensuous aroma is filling the air.  With these combinations, I know my facial will be sweet and relaxing.
  • Lastly, I also like personal attention. I like feeling special when I get a facial… The gentle massage, the enriching treatments… That’s just ME.

Calling All Men!

MEN… You too can care for your skin, and should, without shame or judgement!

This message goes out to the Men in our lives..  Weather that’s your Hubby, Brother, Father, Uncle, close Cousin, Friend or that special Man.

Let them know that they aren’t off the hook for taking care of their skin.

So, Fellas, you should also take care of your skin just like us, as if your life depended on it, and it does.  By now everyone knows how important wearing sun screen is, RIGHT?  It’s NOT just for the ladies or the kids..

I feel our Men should be following these simple steps for healthy skin care also:

  • You must wash your face every night, with a cleanser, that’s right for your skin type (You may get the ones for Men) preferably not soap, that’s used on your body. Cleansing is important because if you knew how much guck is in the air, you wouldn’t want to sleep with these nasty particles sticking to your face and staying on your sheets!
  • You must put a moisturizer on your skin after this wash. Ok, ok, I will call this, “ lotion” if that makes you feel better.  I would prefer a “lotion” that’s best for your skin type, but we will get into that, at a later date. (again you can choose one that is for Men)
  • In the morning, wash your face again, and repeat the “lotion”… This time after the lotion, apply a small amount of sun screen, with a SPF of at least 15, if you are just walking from car, train, or bus.  If you work outside or spend most of your days outside, a SPF of 30 is recommended.  The lighter your skin, the higher the SPF, about SPF 30 is key.

A lot of men will work out, and take care of their bodies, why not do the same for the skin that protects the outside of this body?

Once you follow these simple steps, (which is only the beginning) you will start to look as young as you feel.

Getting older is something that we all hope we will do with style and grace. Aging isn’t the end of the world and if you do it properly, each new year can be the best of your life. Use the tips provided here to keep yourself feeling and looking young and alive:

Aging is a worry for many people, but can be slowed down by remaining healthy.

Daily exercise. No one hates to exercise as much as me, but once you make it part of your daily routine, it doesn’t feel like exercise. A healthy diet can reduce aging effects,  especially by drinking water. There are a lot of ways to make water more tasty, (I have a Soda Stream machine, and of course the favor packs) so drink up and stay hydrated.   Getting plenty of sleep and taking care of your skin is another way to make sure you reduce wrinkles. I love my facials, and rest!  Book your facial today.  Everyone ages, but that doesn’t mean you can’t age well!

One of the best things that you can do, in order to slow down the aging process in your body is to get your omega 3 fatty acids, and eat plenty of green leafy vegetables.

Special note: If you can, make sure you’re including a decent amount of fish in your diet. The omega-3 fatty acids that are most commonly found in fish have been shown to aid in skin development. This can keep your skin looking smooth and young much longer. If you’re allergic to fish, try omega-3 supplements.

Leafy green vegetables, particularly spinach, are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. This particular vegetable is packed with lutein which helps to keep your eyes sparkling white. This healthy vegetable is also a great source of vitamin B, C and E as well as potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids. Be sure to protect your skin from the sun

Getting a bit of sun each day can be very beneficial but be sure to wear sunscreen while you do it. Overexposure can lead to wrinkles and even skin cancer. Taking care of your skin is vital to living a long and healthy youthful life.

Get enough sleep nightly.

It is said that each person needs an average of eight hours daily. Not getting adequate sleep can cause depression, heart problems, and more.

If you feel tired REST! Get the amount needed that’s right for you.

One of my thoughts on the biggest culprit of aging is the STRESS factor.  If you can, find a way to lessen the amount of things that you stress over, you are sure to feel much better about your life each day. Do not let the little things bring you down which can be detrimental to your health and age you quicker.

So, RELAX and find joy in life!
