For your Skin!!
I always ask my Sisters this question… The answer is ALWAYS no! or I DON’T NEED SUNSCREEN, I’m Black…. PLEASE, this is NOT TRUE. We as Black people can get Sun Burns and Sun Damage, that can lead to Skin Cancer. I’m not saying burning and damages cause cancer, but I am saying it’s important to use SPF, especially if you are consistently out in the Sun.
Here is some SPF information I would like to share:
SPF is the, Sun Protection Factor that is used for UVB rays. This is the number that is displayed on the bottle, and is the measurement of how much Sun is needed to produce a burn on protected skin. The higher the number, the increase of protection. UVA isn’t measured by this.. I’ll explain the difference in a minute… so choosing a sunscreen that protects both, like Broad Spectrum would be ideal.
When deciding on what Sunscreen to choose there are some terms you will need to pay attention to:
- Broad Spectrum is one term that will be quite important. This offers UVB and UVA protection. UVB is what causes skin to burn under the Sun, and UVA causes Sun damage beyond the skin surface.
- Chemical Sunscreen that is made of octocrylene or avobenzone, protects by absorbing UV rays.
- Physical Sunscreen Block rays. Made of titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide form a physical barrier between UV rays and skin. These are usually mineral in nature.
- Sport and Water-Resistant, sunscreens are usually tested by FDA standards, to withstand when you get wet, and when you dry off, several times. This sunscreen should last after these task, and should still be effective.
Now, there are questions as to if Sunscreen is safe to use…. Well I’m no Doctor, scientist or chemist but NOT using it I feel can be just as UNSAFE. Until there are definitive answers that say DO NOT USE, using the Physical Sunscreen may be the way to go, just to have some protection. Of course you can always wear hats and protective clothing as well….
